New York authorities announced that the Rikers island jail located in the East River Strait would be shuttered. The City Council has recently voted for such a decision, according to The New York Times.

About $8 billion will be spent on closing the prison complex. The US authorities are planning to invest an even larger amount in a project to automate the detention of prisoners.

As it became known to Artoftech, about $6.8 billion will be invested in the development of intelligent automation systems based on AI that will be used in prison facilities throughout the USA.  The systems will be able to recognize prisoners’ emotions, predict riots or discontent.

Thanks to this system, it will be possible to solve the problem due to which the Rikers Prison is getting closed. Among the reasons for closing Rikers, the authorities indicated a decrease in the number of prisoners, poor prison conditions and cases of violence. The City Council speaker Corey Johnson called Rikers “a symbol of cruelty and inhumanity,” says Reuters.
